Don’t let Hollywood fool you with all its comedic stereotypes: dentures truly are a great way to improve not just the cosmetic appearance of your entire smile, but its functionality too.

Dentists often recommend this avenue of treatment for patients who are missing teeth. Aging, illness or trauma, genetics, decay, and gum disease are just a few things that can cause you to have missing teeth. To learn more about dentures in SW Calgary, contact our local dental practice today!

What are Dentures?

A pair of dentures is a customized prosthetic that’s designed to sit upon the ridges in your mouth. This device is made of a gum-colored base and artificial teeth. The base utilizes suction and your saliva to remain in position in your mouth, although denture adhesive can be used as well.

The main types of dentures are:

  1. Complete dentures. As the name implies, complete dentures replace both your upper and lower set of teeth. They are also removable.
  2. Partial dentures. This particular device is utilized when you are missing only some teeth. Like complete dentures, they’re also removable. Fixed partial dentures also exist, but they are permanently installed in your mouth and can’t be taken out.
  3. Implant-supported dentures. Implants are surgically inserted into your jaw. Over time, the titanium implants will fuse together with your bone to provide a very stable support system for your smile. The dentures are placed over top of these.
  4. Same-day dentures. These dentures are created in the dental clinic instead of a separate dental lab. You’ll be able to have a brand-new smile in the blink of an eye!

Do’s and Don’ts of Denture Care

Wearing dentures is just one part of maintaining good oral hygiene and keeping them in good condition is a crucial step to do just that. With that said, listed below are some do’s and don’ts when it comes to caring for your dentures. And if you have any questions or concerns about this, reach out to your dentist in SW Calgary.

1. Eat carefully.

Especially when you’re just getting used to your dentures. Chewing slowly and consuming soft foods such as soup, mashed potatoes, and yogurt will help you adjust to eating with your device.

2. Clean your dentures.

If you don’t clean your dentures regularly, food particles and bacteria will build up, and this damages your oral tissues and gums. It’s recommended that you clean your dentures after each meal. Use room temperature water and a soft-bristled toothbrush to scrub them; this will help avoid them becoming scratched too.

When you book a regular dental cleaning and checkup with a dentist near you, be sure to bring your dentures. They’ll be able to thoroughly clean them until they shine.

3. Don’t wear your dentures to bed.

It’s important that you let your mouth rest while your sleep. Otherwise, your gums can become sore and even recede, both of which will influence how your dentures fit inside your mouth.

4. Practice continual care.

Your dentures are there to help you eat, laugh, and talk every day. Dutifully looking after them and contacting your dentist if they become damaged or if any other issues arise, will help ensure that they serve you well for a long time.
